Why Turkish Red Lentil Soup Is Good for Your Blood Pressure

Every ingredient in this Turkish red lentil soup earns its place. Together, they form a bowl that actively supports cardiovascular health.

Red lentils are one of the most heart-friendly foods you can eat. Rich in soluble fiber, they help reduce LDL cholesterol over time. Folate and magnesium — two nutrients directly linked to healthy blood pressure — are also found in abundance here. According to research published by the American Heart Association, regular legume consumption is associated with meaningfully lower cardiovascular risk.

Garlic is one of the most studied natural supports for blood pressure management. A meta-analysis published in the Journal of Nutrition confirmed that garlic produces a consistent reduction in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in people with hypertension.

Carrots deliver potassium and beta-carotene. Potassium counteracts the blood pressure-raising effects of sodium by helping your kidneys flush excess salt more efficiently. The National Institutes of Health recognizes adequate potassium intake as a key dietary factor in blood pressure regulation.

Celery contains phthalides, natural compounds that relax the muscles around artery walls. When those muscles relax, blood flows with less resistance throughout the circulatory system. The result is a meaningful, natural reduction in blood pressure.

Olive oil is a cornerstone of the DASH diet and Mediterranean eating patterns. Its oleic acid and polyphenol content support arterial elasticity and reduce systemic inflammation.

Mint and oregano are more than flavor additions. Both herbs contain antioxidants that protect blood vessel walls from oxidative damage — one of the underlying drivers of arterial stiffness and elevated blood pressure.

In short, this is not just a low-sodium soup. It is a bowl built around ingredients that work together for your heart.

Directions

You can of course use ready chicken stock, but we like to make our own as a good stock will enhance your soup. If you have the leftover carcass from a roast chicken then this is an excellent thrifty option. We tend to use some fresh chicken pieces like 3 thighs.

Place in your pan, fill two-thirds with cold water and put on the heat. If you have any vegetable off cuts from onions, carrots, celery, leeks or a couple of bay leaves, pop these in to add flavor. When the stock is starting to simmer, turn the heat right down so it simmers gently for at least an hour.

Meanwhile, finely chop your vegetables. A food processor is ideal. Soften these in a large pan with a good splash of olive oil. Cook gently until the vegetables are soft and the natural sweetness is enhanced. Add your tomato paste, season with salt and pepper and cook for another few minutes.

Finishing the Soup

When your stock is ready, remove the chicken pieces and leave to cool. If the chicken has broken down, it is safest to strain the stock for any small bones.

Rinse your lentils and add together with the stock and softened vegetables in a large pan. Add your herbs. Season to taste but do not over-salt, as the flavors will concentrate with cooking. Cook together on a gentle simmer for one and a half hours until the lentils are just starting to break down into a beautiful textured consistency.

Serve with a squeeze of fresh lemon, a simple side salad of onion, cucumber and tomato dressed with olive oil, lemon, salt and pepper, and a granary or wholemeal roll for a delicious, satisfying lunch. The stock chicken pieces are also delicious with the soup on the side or flaked on top.

Why This Recipe Fits a Heart-Healthy Eating Plan

This Turkish red lentil soup fits naturally within the DASH diet — the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension — recommended by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute as a first-line dietary strategy for managing high blood pressure. It is high in potassium, magnesium, and fiber. It is low in saturated fat and sodium. It uses olive oil instead of butter. Every one of those choices supports healthier blood pressure readings over time.

It also fits our earlier discussion of how blood sugar and heart health overlap. Lentils have a low glycemic index. They digest slowly and create a gentler rise in blood sugar — making this soup a smart choice for anyone managing both blood pressure and blood sugar simultaneously.
