Why and How RESPeRATE Lowers Blood Pressure?

RESPeRATE is a medical device that uses patented device-guided breathing technology to relax constricted blood vessels and lower blood pressure.

For more details see our product product demonstration video
RESPeRATE taps the body’s natural tendency to follow musical rhythms. RESPeRATE analyzes the breathing pattern and composes, in real time, a personalized melody with two distinct inhale and exhale guiding tones. By gradually prolonging the exhalation tone, RESPeRATE leads the patient to the therapeutic zone of 5-7 breaths per minute with prolonged exhalation guiding tones. After each session of device guided breathing, respiration returns to normal, but the beneficial impact on blood pressure accumulates and is maintained with routine use.
In scientific terms, RESPeRATE works by reducing sympathetic neural activity, and creating a sustained decrease in peripheral resistance and arterial stiffness

I have very high blood pressure. Will RESPeRATE still help me?

Absolutely. In fact, RESPeRATEs’ clinical studies have demonstrated a normalizing effect – People with higher initial blood pressure got a larger reduction. For example people with initial systolic blood pressure over 160 points had a 25.6 point average reduction whereas people with initial blood pressure of less than 150 points had a 9.6 point reduction. See more information on our Clinical Proof page. Please note, RESPeRATE is for chronic high blood pressure and not an acute treatment. If you feel your blood pressure spiked to dangerous levels contact your doctor immediately

What is the recommended course of treatment for RESPeRATE?

Studies have shown RESPeRATE delivers significant blood pressure reductions when it is used for 15 minutes at a time, at least three to four times per week, in order to attain 40 or more minutes of slow breathing (<10 breaths per minute) with prolonged exhalation per week. Additional use has shown to provide further blood pressure reductions, and there is no danger of using the device too much. So, we recommend using RESPeRATE daily.

How long does it take to realize a decrease in blood pressure from using RESPeRATE?

In clinical trials, most patients saw the bulk of the results after just three to four weeks of treatment. Further reductions accumulate with consistent use.

How long do the effects of using RESPeRATE last?

Clinical studies show that RESPeRATE can provide a sustained all-day reduction in blood pressure with regular use. As with other physical exercises, the benefits will not be maintained over time without continued routine use. Compliance is good as most patients find RESPeRATE relaxing and pleasant to use.

Can RESPeRATE be used with medications? Can it replace my medications?

RESPeRATE can be safely used alongside medications. The blood pressure reductions delivered by RESPeRATE are on top of medication and/or lifestyle modifications. Furthermore, working with their doctors, many RESPeRATE users have been able to avoid additional medications, reduce dosage, and in some cases eliminate them. Please note, we strongly recommend that you do not modify your hypertension treatments without the advice and consent of your doctor.

Can the breathing exercises be performed alone, without the device?

No, it’s not as easy as it sounds. In order to lower your blood pressure, breathing must be specifically paced with prolonged exhalation, and without effort. Even the simplest breathing exercises, such as counting, reciting a mantra, or consciously observing one’s breathing, requires concentration which is effort. RESPeRATE does the work for you by using rhythmic tones to guide breathing interactively. This slows breathing without a conscious effort. So, while unaided breathing techniques can have a relaxing effect, RESPeRATE has been proven through clinical studies to deliver a significant and lasting effect on high blood pressure.

Is RESPeRATE the same as yoga or meditation?

No. While based on the same fundamental physiological phenomena, namely that structured breathing exercises can have a beneficial effect, RESPeRATE is the only method proven to lower blood pressure repeatedly in well designed clinical studies. The key difference is that unaided breathing techniques such as yoga and meditation, require effort and concentration, which counter the lowering of blood pressure (by raising sympathetic nervous system activity). So, while yoga and meditation may be relaxing, and there is some data showing a blood pressure lowering effect, scientific consensus does not support them as practical interventions for treating hypertension. In contrast, RESPeRATE’s patented method for real-time device guided breathing utilizes our natural tendency to follow external rhythms to deliver the therapeutic effect of breathing without effort.

Using RESPeRATE

How do I change the volume on the device?

To adjust the volume on your device, simply press the UP or DOWN arrow button on the device’s keypad. The volume icon is displayed on the device’s screen, along with the current volume level. Continue pressing the button until you reach your preferred volume. After a few seconds, RESPeRATE automatically returns to the previous display.

How do I change the melody on the device?

To select a melody, simply press the menu button once. The melody icon is displayed on the device’s screen, along with the current melody number. Use the UP or DOWN button to scroll between melodies. For your convenience, RESPeRATE remembers your most recent melody choice.

How do I know where to position the sensor and sensor belt?

You should position the sensor belt around either your abdomen or your chest, depending on where your breathing belt is most pronounced. You should adjust the belt to fit snugly while you are in a sitting position and be sure that the sensor belt is neither too tight nor too loose.

How long should the recognition stage take?

The recognition stage should not last longer than two minutes. If it takes longer than two minutes, try repositioning your sensor and relax and breathe normally.

What is the INFO or “i” button used for?

The INFO button has a triple purpose: A) Momentarily pressing on INFO during the guided session, provide you feedback on how you are doing and how much time is left until the end of the session B) Press + hold during the guided session, allows you to “Refresh” your guided melody parameters in case it is not comfortable to follow. C) Press + hold right after the device is turned on allows you to enter the Statistic mode where you can examine the data from your last session, your last 7 days and your last 60 days. Please refer to the User Manual for specific details.

How long should it take me to start breathing under ten breaths per minute?

There is no set amount of time to slow your breathing to under ten breaths per minute. It all depends on your body’s own individual needs. Just follow the sound patterns as best you can and the RESPeRATE device will guide you to the slowest breathing rate that is right for you during that session.

What happens if I can’t slow my breathing to follow the device?

Don’t try to force yourself. If you are having trouble following the device’s pace, simply breathe normally. Within one minute, RESPeRATE will automatically readjust itself to your breathing rate and pattern and begin gradually slowing your breathing down again. The readjustment and slowing process will continue until you reach the breathing pattern most comfortable and beneficial for you.

Am I supposed to lengthen my exhalation period when conducting the breathing exercises?

All you have to do is synchronize your breathing to the inhale and exhale tones created by the device. RESPeRATE will automatically prolong your exhalation period in the best way for you. If for some reason you have difficulty following the melody, breathe normally and RESPeRATE will automatically readjust itself to your natural breathing and start the slowing process again.

Whom should I contact for help with my device?

Our Customer Service department is open Sunday through Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM EST. You can also contact us for help with your device anytime via email. Our number is 1-900-220-1925.

What if I already start with a breathing rate of less than 10 breaths per minute (BPM)?

Normal respiratory rates reported in healthy adults vary between 12 to 18 breaths per minute. If you are experiencing a lower initial BPM, you may either be holding your breath or taking slower, deeper breaths than you normally would during everyday activities while the device is in its recognition phase. Remember, the key is to breathe effortlessly. Some users find that, in order to allow the RESPeRATE to obtain a true baseline breathing rate in a short time during the recognition phase, a distracting activity such as reading a paragraph from the newspaper can be beneficial. If, in fact, your normal breathing rate is under 10 BPM, RESPeRATE can still prove to be beneficial for your cardiovascular system, as it will coach your breathing to a comfortable rate within the ‘Therapeutic Zone,’ (where the reduction of sympathetic activity occurs), that is right for you.
Please do not hesitate to contact our Customer Care team if you have further questions. Please note, if you feel that RESPeRATE is not for you, you may return the device within 60 days of purchase and we will refund 100% of your purchase price – no questions asked.

How often should I use RESPeRATE?

Your goal for each week should be to achieve 45 minutes of effective exercise time (The number of minutes spent breathing under ten breaths per minute). We recommend using the RESPeRATE for 15 minutes at a time, at least 3-4 times per week. Additional use has been shown to provide additional blood pressure reductions, and there is no danger of using the device too much.

How do I know if I am doing the exercise properly?

When you perform the exercise properly, you can actually see the decrease in your breathing rate displayed on the device’s screen. You can also press the “Current Effective Exercise” button on the top left of the device at any time to check how many “effective minutes” (The number of minutes spent breathing under ten breaths per minute) you have acquired within the session.
The “Effective Exercise Time” is the total amount of time (in minutes) spent breathing in the therapeutic zone of under ten breaths per minute. Please note that the “Effective Exercise Time” also depends on proper positioning of the respiration sensor and will be somewhat less than the actual time spent. If you feel that Effective Exercise Time log is significantly less than the time you spent in breathing under 10 breaths per minute, reposition the sensor.

What is the meaning of the numbers displayed on the screen when the device is turned on?

When the device is turned on, the number momentarily displayed is the number of “Therapeutic Minutes” accumulated in the past 7 days followed by the “Average Synchronization Rate”.
Therapeutic breathing occurs when you synchronize your breathing with the guiding tones, without conscious efforts, slowing it down to less than 10 breaths per minute with prolonged exhalation.
Your goal is to breathe with guiding tones and log at least 10 minutes of slow therapeutic breathing per session. Significant reductions and all day blood pressure lowering can be achieved by accumulating at least 40 minutes of therapeutic breathing per week and a synchronization rate of 60% or more.
Keep in mind that RESPeRATE updates these numbers every day by adding the number of “Therapeutic Minutes” you logged today and subtracting the amount you logged 8 days ago. This means these numbers may go down. For example, if you don’t use the device for 7 days the number will be 0. So, make sure you log enough proper sessions to meet your goals.

How do I change the duration of the session of the RESPeRATE device?

The default duration for each session is 15 minutes. To change this default time, press the menu button 4 times. Use the Up or Down buttons on the device to adjust the default time. For more information on changing the settings of the RESPeRATE device, please consult the User Manual.

When is the best time to measure my blood pressure (BP) after a RESPeRATE session?

It depends on your goals.
To see the all-day sustained benefits of RESPeRATE it is recommended to measure your blood pressure daily at the same time, preferably as you get up prior to taking any medications, eating or exercising.
To see the impact of a single RESPeRATE session, you can measure your blood pressure before a session and again 5-10 minutes after the end of the session. Ensure to keep sitting quietly during that extra 5-10 minutes wait. The wait is required as with any other physical exercise, a temporary increase in blood pressure is possible after the exercise can be expected, especially if you have made an excessive effort during the breathing exercise, so measuring immediately after the exercise might result in less consistent measurements. Also see the next question – “How can I maximize the benefits from using RESPeRATE?”. If the increase in BP is unusually high or is of concern for you, discontinue using the device and consult a physician.

How can I maximize the benefits from using RESPeRATE?

In order to maximize the benefits from RESPeRATE, it is important that you perform the breathing exercises without making an effort. This means that you should not try to hold your breath or try to overly prolong the periods of inhaling or exhaling beyond what is comfortable for you. If you ever feel that the melody is too slow for you and requires effort to stay in sync with it, simply breathe at the last pace, which was comfortable for you. Within a few breaths, RESPeRATE will automatically readjust the melody to your new breathing rate and pattern and begin again to guide you toward a slower breathing rate.
It is also recommended not to use any other breathing techniques such as breath holding or Buteyko during the exercise as these methods may require concentration and effort.
Note: In the first few sessions, your slowest comfortable breathing rate might be higher than 10 breaths per minute.
