High Blood Pressure and Hearing Loss

In one study a total of 274 patients between the ages of 45 – 64 participated with the researchers finding a direct correlation between the presence of hypertension – also known as high blood pressure – and impaired hearing.

On a positive note, the researcher’s found that by bringing a patient’s blood pressure under control an additional loss of hearing could be prevented.

Hearing loss prevents people from being able to communicate as effectively as they could before they had a hearing loss, which can lead to social isolation.

In turn, this can increase the chance of developing depression and associated conditions.  Dr. Mohan Jagade, head of the ENT department at JJ Hospital, which conducted the study noted that:

“Hypertension is a trigger for several kinds of diseases but hearing loss affects the quality of life and, therefore, it’s important to rectify it at the earliest.”

Dr. Jagade added that with the study indicating that hypertension is an accelerating factor of degeneration of the hearing apparatus and it is important that health professionals concerned with changes caused by hypertension work in coordination to improve the quality of life of the patient.

When Hearing Loss Is Sudden

The American Heart Association published a recap of an extensive study that establishes a relationship between sudden sensorineural hearing loss, more easily called SSNHL, and stroke. This condition is marked, obviously, with the sudden onset of hearing loss, as in one day you hear fine and a week later you can’t hear the TV anymore.

So, we’re not talking about the slow, gradual hearing loss associated with the aging process. This is different, you hear, then you don’t. Very sudden.

Hypertension and hearing loss study

The Sudden sensorineural hearing loss study, conducted in Taiwan, showed a clear relationship between the onset of sudden hearing loss and stroke. Published in Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association, this important study suggests that sudden loss of hearing might be an early sign of vulnerability to stroke, foreshadowing an actual cerebrovascular event stroke as much as two years later.

Conclusion

It is important that people with high blood pressure get their hearing checked by a trained audiologist immediately to ensure that their hearing isn’t affected by high blood pressure or hypertension.
