You already know that diet and exercise affect your blood pressure. But your sleep schedule? That one surprises most people.

This matches what large-scale reviews have found. A 2024 meta-analysis of more than one million adults confirmed that short sleep raised hypertension risk by 7 percent overall. When sleep dropped below five hours, that risk climbed to 11 percent. (PubMed 39008468)

A 2023 study in the journal Hypertension analyzed more than two million nights of sleep data from adults worldwide.
